Paying with BlueCard or FH Card

When you are enrolled at RWTH Aachen or FH Aachen you use your student ID, the BlueCard or FH Card, for paying in the dining hall. You top up your card at the terminals, put it on the card readers at the checkouts and the money is debited from your BlueCard or FH Card automatically .

You can also sign up for AUTOLOAD in order to top up your card by direct debit. With this cashless top-up system your card is loaded automatically at the checkouts in all dining halls in Aachen and Jülich.

Where can I load money onto my card?

There are card loading terminals in all dining facilities. At the balance readers you can check the current amount on your card.

Is there a limit on how much I can load onto my card?

You can top up your card with a maximum amount of €75. Please note that the card terminals do not give any change.

I want to refund the balance on my card. How does that work?

During service hours, the Infopoint in Mensa Academica, Pontwall 3 refunds your remaining balance.

Mensa Jülich has the following service hours for AUTOLOAD registrations and balance refunds:

Tuesdays   2 pm to 3 pm
Wednesdays        9 am to 10 am


What if my BlueCard or FH Card does not contain a chip?

If you have a BlueCard or FH Card without chip you can pay by Student Guest Card. These cards are available at the terminals in our dining halls for a deposit of 2 € (plus 3 € minimum loading amount). On presentation of your student ID you pay the student price.

What if my BlueCard or FH Card gets lost or damaged?

If your card gets lost or damaged, you will receive a new one at the service desks of RWTH Aachen or FH Aachen.

The Infopoint of Studierendenwerk Aachen transfers the money from a lost or damaged BlueCard to the new one.

The balances of FH Cards are transferred automatically as soon as the new card is put into one of the terminals.

How safe is the use of the chip card?

Data protection: The BlueCard, FH Card, Student Guest Card and Guest Card are chip cards on which only the balance and the card number are saved. No personal data is recorded.

Who will help me if I have questions regarding my card balance?

For questions regarding your balance please refer to the Infopoint located in Mensa Academica. You can also send an email to   

The Infopoint checks your balance, answers your questions and transfers the remaining balance from a lost or damaged card to your new one.

How do I activate my FH Card before using it for the first time?

Before it can be used as means of payment in our dining halls, the FH Card has to be activated in two steps:

1. Enter the activation code you received together with your FH Card on
2. In order to activate the payment function you just need to insert the FH Card into a card loading terminal of Studierendenwerk Aachen. The terminals are located in all dining halls. After having loaded your card you can pay with it in all dining facilities

How do I pay without cash if I am not a student?

Guests who are not students and who do not pay the social contribution to Studierendenwerk pay with the Guest Card. It costs €2.

In RWTH dining halls the Guest Card can be bought at the terminals. The terminals are installed in Mensa Academica, Mensa Vita and Coffee Bar Vita, Bistro Templergraben, Mensa Ahornstraße, C-Caffè and Forum Cafete.

In FH dining halls Mensa Eupener Straße, Mensa Bayernallee, Mensa Goethestraße and Mensa Jülich the Guest Cards are sold at the checkouts. They also cost €2.

Guest Card holders pay a fee of €1,50 on all subsidized menus.

Balance refund
The balance is refunded at the Infopoint in Mensa Academica, Pontwall 3 and in the coffee bar in Mensa Vita.

Service points

Students of RWTH Aachen receive a BlueCard as student identity card. BlueCard holders can refer to the RWTH BlueCard Service Point (located in the SuperC buidling) when a card gets lost or damaged.

Students of FH Aachen can receive an FH Card as student identity card on request. Information about the card can be found here.
