New kiosk for the “KaWo” quarter

Shop owner and former tenant of KaWo 1, Dinesh, wants to offer diverse products

Groceries, household goods, and even freshly baked buns: The new KaWo-kiosk called „express markt“ opens this week and provides groceries for three residence halls of Studierendenwerk Aachen on Kastanienweg.

With a total amount of 1,194 beds in three residence halls, student life pulsates on Aachen’s Kastanienweg. Campus Melaten and green spaces for joggers and bikers are right around the corner, which makes the quarter a popular student hot spot. But there has always been one minor restriction: The on-site supply of groceries for the tenants has not been satisfactory yet.

This is going to change on Thursday, August 3, though, when the “express markt” opens in the new residence hall KaWo 3. It is a kiosk for the entire KaWo quarter. Shop owner Dinesh Thirunavukkarasu used to study mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University. He lived in the residence hall KaWo 1 – so he knows the district like the back of his hand: “From my time living here I know that, at times, it can be difficult to spontaneously buy basic food. That is why we try to offer as many different products as possible.”

Snacks, crackers, sweets, and drinks, but also general household items for the bathroom or the kitchen, like disposable razors, cleaning agent, baking parchment, and tooth brushes can be bought at the store. Thanks to a small kitchen in the back of the kiosk, there will also be fresh oven baked goods like buns, croissants, and pretzel sticks available every day.

“The Studierendenwerk shows a lot of support and always lends a sympathetic ear to us. Especially the facility management department – they included us in the planning of the premises right from the start. The experts helped us with the ventilation system, fire safety, and more”, says the shop owner. He also works together with the tenants of the three KaWo residence halls, he further explains: “I’m in touch with the students via messenger app. They can give me feedback or express wishes at any time. We’re happy to adjust the goods to their needs.”

The express markt is located in the middle one of the courtyards of KaWo 3, Kastanienweg 8-14. It is open on weekdays from 7 am to 10 pm and on weekends from 8 am to 10 pm. To celebrate the opening of the shop on Thursday, a barbecue with the student tenants is planned.
