DSW: Slightly more BAföG-funded students

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of BAföG-funded students has risen slightly from 489,000 in 2022 to 501,400 in 2023. Matthias Anbuhl, Chairman of the Executive Board of Deutsches Studierendenwerk, comments on this:

"It is good that after years of falling numbers of sponsored students, the downward trend now appears to have stopped for the time being. However, a real turnaround in BAföG is still pending. The latest social survey shows that around a third of all students have less than 800 euros a month, but only 12 percent receive BAföG. Student grants must finally reach more students again, including those from the lower middle class. To achieve this, an automatic adjustment of the allowances and benefit rates in line with price and income trends is absolutely essential. The real big boost and the fundamental structural reform of BAföG are still pending."
