RWTH once again awarded Fairtrade University status

RWTH Aachen University has been recognized as a Fairtrade University for another two years

In 2022, RWTH Aachen University was certified as a Fairtrade University by Fairtrade Deutschland e.V. for the first time. Now the university has once again been awarded for its sustainability awareness and will be able to hold the title for the next two years. The renewal of the title is further recognition of RWTH's commitment. As a Fairtrade University, it implements aspects of fair trade in everyday university life, promotes awareness among university members and supports specific projects.

"As a university, we also have a social responsibility as a driving force in the socio-cultural and ecological field. The award encourages us in this commitment. We are delighted to be a Fairtrade University for another two years and will continue to promote fair trade to improve working conditions in the producing countries," emphasizes RWTH Rector Professor Ulrich Rüdiger.

Whether through fair trade events and campaigns or the use of fair trade products in catering, the university promotes awareness of its own consumer behavior and its impact in international growing regions. "Since 2023, the exclusive use of fair trade coffee, black and green tea and cocoa has been stipulated in the framework contracts for catering services. Most of the textiles in our merchandising store are certified by the fairwear foundation. We are pleased to contribute to a more sustainable RWTH," says Michael Zündorf, Head of Central Purchasing at RWTH.

A large number of fair trade products can also be found in the RWTH store. The commitment to conscious consumption at RWTH is spread across various shoulders. In addition to the administration, the General Student Committee and the Studierendenwerk are also actively involved in fair trade. Products such as fair-trade coffee have long been part of the catering offer.
