Bonn/Berlin, 18 March 2021. The student initiative "TechAcademy" of Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main will be honored this year as "student of the year" by Deutscher Hochschulverband (DHV) and Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW).
The "TechAcademy", which was founded in 2018 and now has about 20 students, pursues the goal of promoting the digital competence of their fellow students from all subjects with free classes. As volunteer mentors, they impart a basic understanding of programming even to fellow students with no prior knowledge. The "TechAcademy" approach is considered to be easy and, in IT, which has a strong male connotation, is also meant to adress women. About half of the participants in the "TechAcademy" seminars are female.
Since its founding in fall 2018, more than 250 students from eleven departments and over 56 different courses of study have learned programming in the field of Data Science (Python or R) or Web Development (HTML, JavaScript, CSS) within one semester at the "TechAcademy". Each semester, 80 students learn the basics of programming or advanced skills in a structured program.
The "student of the year" award was presented by the DHV and DSW for the sixth time. The award honores students who demonstrate outstanding commitment that goes beyond their academic achievements and should be as unique and innovative as possible. According to the opinion of the six-member DHV/DSW jury, the TechAcademy fulfills these criteria through its extraordinary and in every respect exemplary commitment.
Officially, the TechAcademy students will be honored on 31 May 2021, at the online "Gala der Deutschen Wissenschaft" of Deutscher Hochschulverband. The gala will be streamed. The award comes with prize money of 5,000 euros, donated by Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft.
