Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW) welcomes the German government's planned opening of BAföG for refugee Ukrainian students as an "enormously important step and a basis" for the integration of these students into the German higher education system.

DSW Secretary General Matthias Anbuhl explains:
"The opening of BAföG for refugees from Ukraine is an enormously important step and the basis for the integration of these students and prospective students into the German higher education system, and at the same time another clear humanitarian signal from the German government to the people fleeing the Russian war from Ukraine.

We are very pleased for the young people from Ukraine who want to study that the Federal Government has taken up our proposal to open up BAföG and now wants to quickly bring it into the parliamentary procedure.

With the planned opening of BAföG on 1 June 2022, Ukrainians who have fled the country will, if they can prove that they have the appropriate level of language skills and the professional requirements for university studies, in principle have access to real student funding, which the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act, which was in force until the end of May, cannot offer. We very much welcome this change in system or legal status."
