Relief package also for students: Direct payments and BAföG-Plus

  • Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW) on plans by the SPD parliamentary group and discussions in the federal government for further relief
  • DSW Secretary General Matthias Anbuhl: "The coalition must put together a relief package for all students"
  • Demands: Direct payments, regular inflation compensation for BAföG, short-term increase in BAföG requirement rates

Berlin, 29 August 2022. Commenting on the plans of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag and in view of the discussions at the government retreat on Tuesday and Wednesday in Meseberg for possible further relief for citizens, Matthias Anbuhl, Secretary General of Deutsches Studentenwerk, said:

"In fall, many students are going to face social hardship in the face of rising prices. The coalition must therefore put together a relief package for students, consisting of direct payments, regular inflation compensation for BAföG and a short-term increase in BAföG requirement rates.

It is good that the coalition is now considering direct payments to students. This money must help students quickly and unbureaucratically. It is important that the Finance Minister develops a solution here quickly.

In the face of the crisis, Austria has decided, in addition to rapid direct aid for students, to automatically adjust student aid to inflation and to increase rates by up to 12 percent in the short term. Germany must also follow this path. Since 2010 at the latest, BAföG rates have not kept pace with price and income developments. There is an urgent need to catch up here.

The states must pay more aid to the student unions to accompany the federal aid, so that rents in the dormitories and prices in the dining halls do not have to rise even further."
