Berlin, 9 September 2020. On the occasion of today's expert discussion on the topic of student housing in the Bundestag Committee for Construction, Housing, Urban Development and Communities, Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW) confirms its demand for joint Federal and State subsidies for the construction and maintenance of student residences provided by the Studentenwerke and Studierendenwerke.
At the same time, the association emphasizes that the demand for affordable living space for students is likely to remain high even during the pandemic, and even more so after the pandemic - especially on the part of lower-income students, who are dependent on housing at a rent level far below the current BAföG housing requirement of 325 euros per month.
The 57 Studentenwerke and Studierendenwerke organized by Deutsches Studentenwerk provide around 194,000 places in around 1,700 student residence halls throughout Germany. About 10% of students find temporary accommodation there. Especially low-income students, foreign students and first-year students want to go to a residence hall.
Deutsches Studentenwerk recruits with its campaign “Kopf braucht Dach“ (“Head Needs Roof“),together with the Studentenwerke and Studierendenwerke for a greater cooperation between the Federal Government, the States and the municipalities.
