Campaign for more affordable accommodation

  • Studierendenwerk Aachen takes part in Germany-wide campaign
  • „Head needs roof“: More state support for construction and renovation of student residence halls
  • Appeal to students: Sign online petition on the campaign website www.mein-studentenwohnheim.de

Aachen, 19 September 2018. Studierendenwerk takes part in the Germany-wide campaign day „Kopf braucht Dach“ – „Head needs roof”. All Studentenwerke and Studierendenwerke want to draw attention to the difficult housing situation in university cities and demand more support from politicians.

Dirk Reitz, Studierendenwerk CEO, explains: “At the start of the winter term thousands of applicants are waiting for affordable accommodation in our residence halls. This number shows it: There is a lack of student housing in Aachen. The situation is not better in other university cities. We need much more support from politicians – it is not acceptable that Studierendenwerke are the only ones to take responsibility for this. Our demand: More investments in affordable accommodation for students and the provision of funds in order to maintain it.”

With the campaign “Kopf braucht Dach” Studentenwerke and Studierendenwerke request more state support for construction and renovation of student residence halls. Especially students are asked to get active and sign the petition on the campaign website www.mein-studentenwohnheim.de.

Philipp Schulz, student member and deputy chairman of the Administrative Board, approves of the Germany-wide campaign: “The rent in university cities has been increasing quickly for years. If and where young people go to University should not depend on their parents’ income. That is why we urgently need more affordable accommodation in the cities. Residence halls play a decisive part in this – we need every kind of support in order to make it clear to politicians that more funds are needed for building new student residence halls and for maintaining the existing ones!”

Since 2008, the number of publicly funded university places increased by 45 percent, whilst the number of publicly funded residence hall places increased only by 8 percent. “This gap may not grow any further”, demands Dirk Reitz.
