"Kullenhof" - A great residence hall

When you apply for a dorm room first of all the hard facts count: Rent, location and accommodation type – information that can be obtained quickly from the Studierendenwerk website. However, it’s more difficult if you want to get a closer look. For example, if you want to get an idea of what it’s like to live together with a hundred other students. Are the people who live there nice? How is the community structured and organized? One thing is sure: At home at your computer you don’t get the answers. And ringing the residents’ doorbells to ask them spontaneously is also a bad idea.

In order to be able to gain some detailed insight into the residence hall und talk to students who live there the residents of the Kullenhof residence hall have organized a “Day of the Open Dorm”. “We were looking for a way to promote the residence hall and decided that an open day is a good way of showing potential applicants how nice it is to live here”, Rebecca and Joel from the organization team tell. Together with 18 other residents they did a tour of the whole residence hall area for the 63 guests. The future students were able to have a look at the common rooms, the shared kitchens, the bar, the sauna and even some of the residents’ private rooms. In the dorm cinema they watched the image film that was made by the residents themselves. In the evening there was a barbecue for all guests.

Application process
What are the steps to take when you want to live at Kullenhof? First of all, just like for all other dorms, you have to apply for a place at Studierendenwerk. As soon you have reached the top of the waiting list and there is a free suitable room you will get a call. “Therefore it is always important that you are contactable by phone”, Rebecca and Joel explain. “When we have allocated a room to the applicant the residents who share the floor can decide whether they accept him or her as their new neighbour.” When you apply it is important to make a detailed and truthful description of yourself. That ensures a harmonious atmosphere. "What’s also important is patience. Sometimes it takes a while until a place gets free. Especially in the beginning of the semester it can be difficult to get a room. During the semester the waiting period can be shorter!”

About Kullenhof
The Kullenhof residence hall is located opposite the Aachen University Hospital and thus close to nature. Residents point out this is also not bad for parties. Despite the proximity to the countryside there is a good connection to the city centre. The residents say about their residence hall: “ We stand out as a great community. There are many active residents who organize work groups or different kinds of events with great commitment.”
