Study on the living and study situation of students

Starting signal for nationwide study on the living and study situation of students

Today, the German Center for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) is launching the second nationwide online survey The Student Survey in Germany. Over one million students at more than 200 German colleges and universities are invited to take part. The survey will run until August 2025 and invitations will be sent out on a staggered basis according to federal state.

Hanover/Berlin, 27.05.2025. The Student Survey in Germany provides comprehensive data on the reality of students' lives - from social and economic conditions to study progress and conditions, political attitudes and educational pathways. It also allows for differentiated analyses of smaller groups, such as students with children, with health impairments or without a higher education entrance qualification.

The study is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär emphasizes: "Universities are drivers of the future. Universities can only attract outstanding students and researchers if they are attractive. Every student in Germany must have the same opportunities to succeed in their studies. And we want to understand these conditions even better. Good higher education policy needs reliable data. That is why I am asking all students who have been invited: Take part - we want to know how you experience your studies."

"The student survey is unique in Germany in terms of its scope. It is a central source of data for higher education research and education policy," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Monika Jungbauer-Gans, Scientific Director of the DZHW.

Deutsches Studierendenwerk (DSW) is also supporting the survey. DSW President Prof. Dr. Beate A. Schücking also calls on students to participate: “Invest your time – your answers will help to improve study conditions and social framework conditions.”

Background:

The Student Survey in Germany is a nationwide trend study on the life and studies of students. It is used for scientifically based education monitoring and, since 2021, has combined the previous surveys of the Social Survey, the Konstanz Student Survey and the study best: beeinträchtigt studieren. Some of the participants will also be included in the European EUROSTUDENT survey. The aim is to collect representative data on the social and economic situation of students in Germany. The study is scientifically managed and conducted by the DZHW and funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). The German Student Union supports the survey.
