Take a deep breath in “Silent Mensa”

Studierendenwerk is launching a special pilot project in collaboration with RWTH AStA: The new “Silent Mensa” is set to open at the start of the semester, offering a low-stimulus environment for dining. The goal is to provide guests with a quiet space during their breaks at the university.

Recharging with quiet
Students relax in different ways during their breaks. While some enjoy combining their meals with group conversations, others prefer a quiet environment to unwind. For obvious reasons, heavily frequented dining halls usually offer only the former option, yet loud laughter, conversations, clattering dishes, rapid movements, and flickering advertising screens are perceived by an increasing number of guests as energy-sapping and not conducive to relaxation.

Silent Mensa is designed to bring more peace and quiet to the lunch break. Dim lighting, no screens, and quiet or no conversation at all create a less stimulating environment. The goal is to establish a break culture that caters to individual needs.

In addition to a calming interior design and clearly marked quiet zones, the pilot project includes binding but fair rules. Phone calls and voice messages, for example, are prohibited, and cell phone use is only allowed with headphones.

The idea, which was proposed by the AStA to Studierendenwerk, will initially be implemented in Mensa Academica on the first floor. The dining department has designated the area in front of the social room for this purpose. AStA and Studierendenwerk will work closely together to ensure the project’s success. Following the pilot phase, the results of a survey will be used to potentially integrate additional quiet zones into other dining halls.
