Three PETA Stars for the vegan offer!

37 of the 58 German Studentenwerke and Studierendenwerke took part in this year’s survey that was conducted by the animal rights organization PETA Deutschland. With the survey PETA again searched for the most vegan-friendly dining hall. Studierendenwerk gained three of four possible stars for Mensa Academica and Mensa Vita.

Students like it animal- and eco-friendly: Vegan food has become an integral part of young people’s diet. Therefore, PETA elects the most vegan-friendly dining hall once a year and surveys Studierendenwerke. We can be proud of this year’s results: Mensa Academica as well as Mensa Vita were awarded three of four possible stars. Some of the criteria that are assessed in the survey are selection, regularity and labelling of plant-based dishes, trained staff, special vegan days and the promotion of a vegan diet. More is not possible: According to the new points system only those dining halls that offer nothing but vegetarian and vegan dishes can be awarded four stars. Only two dining halls in Berlin and Nürnberg reached the highest rank because they run a “Veggie-Mensa”.

Still, the two biggest Aachen dining halls can be happy about the three stars as, according to PETA, that is a „very good rating”. In both dining halls a vegan dish is part of the meal plan every day. There is also a big vegetable and salad offer that changes daily. For the annual World Vegan Day the halls serve a vegan three-course meal; the cooks, kitchen staff and trainees get regular trainings about vegan cooking. Sustainability in the dining halls, cafeterias and coffee bars is constantly tested and improved.

"We are glad that our efforts to improve our vegan offer result in successful outcomes and are appreciated”, says Gregor Neumann, head of the Dining Department. Last year he had to content himself with one of three stars. “Vegan diet is a big trend that we as modern dining halls want to be a part of. We gladly accept the awarded stars.
